Hi, I'm new here

Hi everybody!

My name is Anna Beverly, and I was born at 9:44am on Thursday, May 9th (my mom and dad's anniversary!) I weighed 7lbs 10 oz and was 20 inches long. Boy does mommy have a story to tell you about my arrival!!! Mom and Dad named me in honor of my grandmothers first and middle names :)

I love sleeping, my "shisshy" Emerson, and milk.

In case you were wondering, Mom and Dad are heads over heels in love with me, and are so happy I'm here :)

It's Gonna Be May

Tomorrow is May 1st.

May 2013 will probably go down as one of the busiest months of our lives. Here is why:

May 1: Doctor's appointment.

May 3: Last day of work until August!!!

May 7: Move all of our crap out of our current house into a moving van. All of it. Thank God we found movers who are cheap and willing to come two days in a row. Clean said house. Park said moving van in sister's driveway for the night. Also have my 40 week appointment this day, because we're not busy or anything.

May 8: Close on our first house. Close on our second house. Give away keys to one house. Get keys to another house. If it sounds confusing, that's because it is. Drive aforementioned moving truck over to our new house and unload. Begin painting. Why yes, I did purchase 14 gallons of paint this weekend. Why, what did you do?

May 9: Our 4-year wedding anniversary. Reminisce with me will ya?

May 10: My 29th birthday. Also known as the last time I will ever publicly acknowledge my age.

May 11: This is the ambitious day when I'd like to believe that all of the painting is done in our new house. After living in various states of construction for 4 years, I am so so so happy that the only thing our new place really needs is paint (14 gallons to be exact). Still, Rome wasn't built in a day, so I'm sure it will take more than 3 days to paint the whole place, despite how many helpers we may or may not have. However, I like to goal set so here we are.

May 12: D-DAY. Also known as Due Date. Also known as Mother's Day. This would be an okay day to go into labor, don't you think?

May 18: My good friend Heather's wedding. I've already RSVP'd yes, and it's annoying when people RSVP and you pay for their meal and they don't show up for your wedding, so bloated or not, I'm going to be there. I should probably start Googling "Dresses to hide post-pregnancy weight" now.

May 2_- 2_: He's told me 100 times, but Jon has some kind of work conference thing one of the last weeks in May. All I heard was "You're going to be alone with two children for the first time ever" and I decided to block it from my memory due to terror.

May 31: Memorial Day weekend begins. I'll be able to wear a bathing suit again by this time right?? And by bathing suit I mean Turkish bath robe.

Alright May - let's do this!!!!

A letter to my youngest

Dear tiny sweetheart in my belly,

As I prepare for my last week of work, I am in awe of time. The way that time seems to fly during the most important moments in your life. Because honestly, I could swear it was yesterday that I took a pregnancy test on a whim and then BAM! I realized I would no longer have a child, but children.

You, my dear, are destined to be the most patient, laid back baby imaginable for how cool you've been with what's happening on the outside. From your big sister crawling directly on my belly, to my admitted lack of "rest" over the last 38 weeks, to the obscene amount of ice cream I've eaten over the last month. You've been awesome. Always with perfect reports from the doctor. Always giving me a little nudge here or there when I need them, but then taking nice long rests at night so mommy can sleep.

I'll admit that I feel all kinds of guilt that moms feel when pregnant with a toddler in tow. Dubbed "second baby syndrome," you are so busy with your active little one at home that you can't embrace pregnancy the way that you did the first time (or the second time in my case). But as I've promised you many, many times, once you're here little one... no one will love you more than your mom and dad.

Some people worry that you won't bond with your second the way you did with your first, but that's actually the least of my worries (and I have alot of them). I just know that nothing compares to the love you feel for your child, and since I know how that feels with your sister and your angel brother, I know that the way I will feel about you will be no different.

No, I mostly worry about dedicating the perfect amount of time to both of my girls. I don't want either of you to ever feel left out or less important than your sibling. I don't want either of you to think I have a "favorite" child - this would kill me. I want you to know that you are both automatically my favorites, because asking me to choose between you two is like asking me to choose whether I'd like to breathe or like for my heart to beat - both are completely essential and you can't have one without the other. (Well, I suppose you can artificially, but let's just work with this metaphor, shall we?)

My point is... your birth order makes no difference to me. You are special. You are loved. You are wanted. You are important, and I could not be more grateful to have you. I get goosebumps and my eyes well up with tears thinking about the moment when I'll first get to see your face, hold you in my arms, and study your features until I have them memorized. I can already picture rocking you to sleep (in our new house!) and smelling that sweet new baby smell and realizing that even though life isn't perfect, we have everything we need because we have you and we have love.

Can't wait to meet you little one!!!

Love,

Mom

Full-term Update!

I will officially be full-term on Sunday.

WHAT?!?!?

I feel like just yesterday I was dry-heaving into the toilet and gagging over the smell of Indian food.

But now reality has set in, and I am just in awe.

My BFF said it best in an email from yesterday.

"Do you realize that in a month from now, your life is going to be vastly different?"

And she's right. New house. New baby. I'm going to have CHILDREN. Not just a baby, but a toddler and a baby. And I'm going to bring these children home to a new house in a new city. You'd think I'd be panicked, but I'm not. I'm actually really excited. (Okay, maybe a little panicked, but still). It's chaotic, it's crazy, and I honestly can't complain. Things are going to be crazy and complicated at first, no doubt, but the day I complain about having two healthy children, a loving husband, 12 weeks off in the summer to spend with my new baby, and a brand new house is the day you can bitch-slap me and tell me to shape up.

So before life gets really crazy, here's my full-term pregnancy update:

How far along? 36 weeks, 5 days

Maternity clothes? Now that the weather has been a little warmer, my uniform is a maternity dress, or maternity pants with a longer shirt and a cardigan. I will be honest, I miss regular clothes.

Stretch marks? I thought I was home free, but alas, there are two under my belly that appeared sometime in the last 2 weeks. I named them Norman and Herman, because they are lame.

Symptoms: Generally feel pretty good. Starting to get really tired, but that's to be expected when you look like you're smuggling a basketball under your shirt. At this point with Em I had terrible back pain and had to wear a belly brace, but I feel basically normal until I look at myself from the side and then go "Whoa! Who is that whale in the mirror?!?!"

Sleep: Pretty good. I feel pretty energized in the morning, but I get really tired around 3 PM everyday, and then get my second wind when I get home and get to play with Emerson. It's like I have a separate energy pocket reserved just for her.

Best moments this week: Celebrating our baby girl at my sprinkle; getting to see her sweet face on the ultrasound and finding out she weighs almost 7lbs!

Miss Anything? Not having to pee in the middle of the night.

Movement: Girlfriend is just so busy in there! She moves constantly, and loves sticking her butt (or back?) on to my right side.

Food cravings: Oreo ice cream (when it doesn't give me acid reflux)

Anything making you queasy or sick: Not really. I am so ready to have coffee again though it's not even funny.

Have you started to show yet: Haha. You're funny.

Wedding Rings On or Off?: Still on! I can't believe it. By 30 weeks last time, I could only wear my wedding band. I can still wear both rings comfortably, so I must not be quite as bloated as I was back then.

Have a lovely weekend! :)

I ate three sundaes on a Sunday

What a wonderful weekend! I'm about to spew all kinds of happy things, hope you don't mind.

Here's why it was awesome:

1) This girl. Obviously. Easter Basket #2 + Bed Head = Love.

2) Our new house passed it's inspection, meaning I'm 99% sure we're moving on May 8th!

3) I found movers that only charge $60/hour and I am certain it will be the greatest investment in the history of investments.

4) Sunday's weather was phenomenal and made me remember why spring is the greatest season of the year (in Ohio at least)

5) I got to spend time with lots of amazing people

6) I had a $3 bar tab (after getting a beer spilled on me and unknowingly ordering a cayenne-spiced brownie, the waiter felt bad and only made me pay for my french fries)

7) I proved that you CAN be 36 weeks pregnant and still go out to the bar for your friends birthday, as long as they serve water and french fries.

8) I went to a "Scentsy" party that actually turned into a Baby Shower for our new princess. I am so touched and grateful and words can't express how much I love my friends. How people can be so thoughtful all the time is beyond me, but these gals prove the world isn't so bad. They also bought gifts for me and for Emerson, including this book that I tried reading to her last night and only got through 3 pages without crying.

9) I ate three ice cream sundaes and that's just fine.

10) I have the most wonderful friends and family EVER.

Four-Fifths Update and the many ways in which I'm a bad mother

Do you ever have one of those moments where you're like "Holy crap, I've been so preoccupied with life that I have forgotten this major thing that's coming up???"

For me, that "thing" is the realization that, at almost 32 weeks, I am 4/5ths of the way through my pregnancy. Meaning, I'm about to have another baby in 8 weeks.

Trying to let that sink in.

Because all of my thoughts/feelings/anxieties have been consumed by this whole house selling/buying process, and all of my remaining time and attention goes to Emerson, I honestly feel like a bad mom.

I am solemnly swearing, though, that once this baby girl gets here, she will get 100% of me. 100% is a relative term when you have two kids under the age of 2, but somehow I am going to defy the laws of math and give 100% of my attention to both girls. And Jon.

I feel like I've barely talked about my pregnancy so far, so I thought I'd provide a quick update on how things are going:

Weight gain: Yeah.... About that. It's more than a little. However, I weigh 20 lbs less right now than I did when I was 32 weeks pregnant with Emerson, so that counts for something right? The silver lining is that I have lost all the baby weight before, so I know I can do it again.

Baby's weight: She measured at 4lbs on Monday! No wonder she feels so big - she is!!!

Food cravings: Peanut butter and spaghetti. Though not together. But should they be???

Energy: After the blissful honeymoon period known as the second trimester, I am starting to get tired again. It's usually worst right after lunch and then around 5:00. I have a separate reserve of energy that is dedicated to Emerson and cleaning, and then whatever is left goes to the television. I've worked out once in the last two months. ONCE. This is the longest I've ever gone without working out since I was a teenager. It's awful. But it's life. I'm burning calories by pinning post-pregnancy workouts and healthy recipes on Pinterest.

Favorite thing about being pregnant: Definitely feeling her move. She is getting so strong! Also, at my  ultrasound on Monday, even though obviously it's hard to tell for sure, I swear she looked just like Emerson! Perfect little round head and face, button nose, and legs that measured 2 weeks ahead (just like her sister). She was smacking her lips and grabbing her toes and I just wanted her to be here right now (but keep cooking sweetheart, mommy will wait until you're good and ready).

Looking forward to: Not having to pee every time I stand up. And sleeping in our king bed again (though this is a house problem, not a pregnancy problem) but I feel like I slept better when pregnant with E because I had more space for my whale-like form.

And honestly, as crazy as this sounds, I'm looking forward to giving birth again. I know right?!? There is just nothing in this world that compares to the moment when you see your beautiful baby for the first time. It makes the whole 9 month journey, from beginning to end, seem like the greatest miracle in the world.

Names: I will honestly tell you that not only do we NOT have a name for this baby, we don't even have any contenders. We can't agree on any one name, so it's most likely going to be an 11th hour decision. Or whoever caves first.

Things left to buy: Everyone tells you "Oh, you're having another girl, so you don't need anything!" Whoever started this rumor is a LIAR. Yes, we are good to go on most clothing, but we would have been fine regardless because for the first 3 months they only wear PJs anyway. But there are still PLENTY of other things that come along with having 2 under 2 that no one told me about. I have most things picked out, I just have to take the plunge and whip out the old Amazon credit card. I am wary of making a ton of purchases right now though since a) we're (hopefully) going to be signing a mortgage contract here shortly and b) I don't want to buy a bunch of stuff and then have to move all that stuff, I'd rather just have it delivered to our new house.

Here's my list of leftover items. I'll attach links to each of these items, in case one of you 39 random readers from Germany want to send us a care package.

  • Second crib: Emerson is way too little for a big girl bed, so she will stay in her crib. We bought this one in white, and it's still in the box disassembled because we have no idea where we'll be living come May 12th. No pressure.
  • Crib mattress. The poor thing doesn't even have a mattress yet. I'm a terrible mother.
  • Crib bedding. Haven't finalize color scheme yet, but I'm leaning toward white or gray.
  • Second camera for our monitor so we can pan between rooms
  • Another Pack N Play, since Emerson still uses her at daycare
  • Furniture. A dresser and changing table at minimum.
  • Glider. I was just going to use Emerson's, but we sit in it every night to read her stories, so I can't take that away. Then I really would be a terrible mother.
  • Double stroller. When I get up the nerve to take them both out in public at the same time.
  • Car Seat. Emerson is in a convertible car seat now, so sister can just use hers. Sweet! We'll need a second convertible seat when she's a year old, but we have plenty of time for that.
  • White noise machine. Em still sleeps with hers, and white noise is one of the most essential baby items, ever. If you like sleep that is.

So that's pregnancy in a nutshell. I can't believe it's so soon - 58 days and she'll be here! And hopefully she doesn't preemptively hate me for any of the aforementioned ways in which I fail as a parent.

Christmas recap and it's a.....

Howdy ya'll!!!

I'm going to do an iPhone photo dump and let these Christmas snapshots do most of the talking.

Our holiday vacation started on a bad note with our sweet girl getting her first cold. She was so miserable, and was extra snuggly. During this time, I thanked God every minute for the Nosefrida and her "baby." Truly lifesavers during this ordeal.

But by Christmas Eve she was doing much better. A few "Chee" (aka Cheerios) and her big girl cup, and she was ready to party!

Aunt Lindsay bought her the cutest blue Christmas dress, and we went out to dinner at Carrabba's (YUM). Tragically, I only took one picture of her adorableness in her dress, and she looks frightened in it. But you get the idea! ;-)

Eating cheese ravioli. (By the way, those sticky placemats are the greatest things ever. No mess, and no baby tossing their plate off the table. Genius!)

Then on Christmas morning, we went to Aunt Lindsay and Uncle Mark's house to open presents. Look at that tree. To say the number of presents under it is excessive is an understatement. Even though 70% of them were for Emerson. Just think of next year when there are THREE babies to buy for... and no, I'm not having twins ;-)

Emerson wasted no time inspecting all of the boxes. She has become quite the climber, and rather enjoyed seeing how far we'd let her get into the pile.

Actually opening presents was boring to her, so we did most of it for her. Santa Claus was VERY good to her, and we are extremely grateful for all of the gifts we received. But seriously, next year, I'm asking for water only. I don't think our house can fit any more toys!

Her favorite "toy" would probably be her new big girl chair. She loves to climb in it backwards and stand up tall, or pretend to be watching TV.

She also loved playing with other people's presents too. Daddy's new golf umbrella? Thanks, I'll commandeer that now.

She also got to open one other gift this year that will be unlike any other......

Santa Claus brought her a baby SISTER!!!!!

I hope you got everything you wished for this Christmas! :)

Baby #2 Must Have Items

One of the benefits to having a second baby so close in age to the first is that you "have everything." The knowledge, the wisdom, the experience, and tons of baby crap that you can recycle and use with your second child.

It feels like I just put some baby stuff away (Boppy, Rock N Play, baby bath tub, etc.) and now we'll be dragging it all back out in just a few short months. Though we do have alot of the essentials, there are still some things we'll need to purchase before May. Not everything is absolutely critical, but it would sure make my life easier! And life with 2under2 is better when it's easy, right??

Baby #2 Must Have Items

Baby #2 Must Have Items by audra5909 on Polyvore

We bought this monitor with Emerson and we LOVE it! I can stalk watch her all night long, and it's clear as day. For baby #2, we can buy just the camera and it will sync with our current monitor, and we can pan their rooms all night long. Yay for concurrent baby stalking watching!

We bought a Baby Bjorn for Emerson and I used it all of 2 times. She was such a tiny baby and I just did not feel like she was secure in it at the beginning. But everything I read about having 2 kiddos is that you MUST have a baby carrier if you want to accomplish anything, and the K'Tan looks so cozy that I think we'll give it a try!

I plan to write an entire post about Emerson's obsession with her "baby." She has a ladybug blankie buddy and let's just say if she had to choose between eating and having her baby right next to her, she'd pick the baby. It's that serious. But I do credit this little thing as the reason why Emerson sleeps so well at night - she's got a friend keeping her company. It's so so soft and lightweight that I don't need to worry about it being "breathable" when the baby is younger. What I will do different with baby #2 though is buy more than one (unlike what we have for Emerson). Big mistake on my part. Big. Huge.

This crib seemed to have the best compromise between style, reviews and price. I bought it on Amazon on Black Friday, but after trolling nursery ideas of Pinterest, I have since exchanged the brown one for a white one. All the adorable nurseries have white cribs, and all of a sudden a brown crib looked hideous. I have my priorities straight. Thank goodness for Amazon Prime and free shipping!

5. Joovy Scooter X2 Double Stroller, Black
My sister, who has 7 children, recommends Joovy for their double strollers over any other brand, so I am absolutely taking her advice. This one has great reviews as well. Since B2 is due in May, I see many, many walks outside with my little ones next summer.

6. JJ Cole Diapers and Wipes Pod
Am I the only mom out there that HATES carrying a diaper bag? Ever since I discovered the clutch, I rarely carry a purse anymore, so carrying a diaper bag feels like carrying ten gallons of paint. Therefore, I need to invest in one of these cute little pods for quick trips out and about.   No need to pack for an entire night away when you're just going to Target. Am I right?

7. Gerber First Essentials Soft Center Latex Pacifier
Don't get me wrong, I still love the Wubbanub. However, at $12.99 a pop, I'm going to try a different approach with B2. These pacifiers came highly recommended and are less than $3. Emerson never took a pacifier past 6 months (which I am grateful for now) but we'll see if new baby is a fan or not.

8. Conair SU7 Sound Therapy and Relaxation Clock Radio
White noise. Critical. The end.

9. Graco Element Pack N Play
We'll need a second PNP for trips and visits, since Emerson will still be too little to go in a regular bed. We have a Graco one now and I'm happy with it (though assembling the thing takes more finesse than I possess usually).

Moms to 2+... am I missing anything??

Pheobe or Pheobo?

Today we're going in for our anatomy scan. This is a Level II ultrasound that can determine how well the baby is growing, as well as screen for any defects that may not have been visible at the 12 week ultrasound.

Oh yeah, and they can tell us if our baby is a Pheobe or a Pheobo (aka boy or girl - kudos to you if you get that reference!)

I am terrified, because I have received bad news at an ultrasound before, but I am going into today with an open heart, and knowing that everything that will happen is out of my hands. And knowing that I can feel this little one kicking away in there as I type this (And Jon got to feel her/him kick too this weekend- such an exciting feeling that will never get old!)

Boy or girl, I honestly could not care less... all I will ever want is a healthy baby. Healthy first, happy second, and everything else is a bonus.

We're not going to find out today though. We'll have the doctor check out the goods, put B or G in an envelope, and we'll open it on Christmas Day - I can't think of a better present.

Last time, I rounded up all of the Old Wive's Tales I could find, and GIRL won. So I decided to do it again and see what happened....

YE OLD WIVE'S TALES
Numerical Significance
Take your age when you got pregnant and add that to the month you are due to determine boy or girl. An even number means you are having a girl and an odd number means you are having a boy.

So 28 + 5 = 33 = Odd number = BOY

Cravings
Craving sweet or citrus = GIRL
Craving meat or salt = BOY

Um, considering I've eaten meatball subs for lunch no less than 3 times a week AND I put garlic salt on everything. (Like, everything), yet I haven't touched a piece of fruit since September, I'll go with BOY.

Heartrate
Over 140 = GIRL
Less than 140 = BOY

This baby's heart rate has been hovering around 145, so GIRL in this case.

Skin
Clear & glowing= BOY
Not so clear and not so glowing = GIRL

Not glowing (unless you count pale pastiness as a glow) but my skin is clear. So BOY.

How you carrying, fool?
Carrying high = GIRL
Carrying low = BOY

I think I'm carrying this one pretty much the same as Emerson. What do you think?

20 weeks, 2011
19 weeks, 2012
I don't know why I'm scowling. Probably because I'm bigger at 19 weeks than I was last year at 20. That's what being pregnant 3 times in three years will do to your body!

Appearance
Have you gotten uglier? = GIRL
Looking better than ever? = BOY

The myth is that girls steal their mother's beauty. That ship sailed long before pregnancy.

Morning sickness.
Mildly sick/Feeling good = BOY
Feeling sick/very sick/sick for a long time = GIRL

GIRL. I was nauseous until 17 weeks this time (Ugh) and was with Emerson too.

Weight Gain
all around = GIRL
all in the front all belly = BOY

Since I can still button my regular pants if they are low-rise, I think I'm leaning toward BOY on this one. My belly may be huge already, but it seems to be staying away from my other body parts (for now...)

Dreams
Dream of a boy = BOY
Dream of a girl = GIRL

I've had three girl dreams, but no boy dreams. All 3 were early on.

Wedding ring on a string
Back and forth = BOY
Circle = GIRL

Reputable gender prediction websites.
Baby Center = BOY
Babygenderprediction.com = BOY
TheBump.com = BOY
Labor of Love = BOY
Baby2see.com = BOY

GIRL = 5
BOY = 9

What do YOU think it is? I won't say what I think, but I guess we'll find out in 8 days - stay tuned! ;-)

Sniff sniff

To you, this may be just a bin full of clothes. Unfolded ones at that.

To me, this is a canyon of adorable baby girl clothing in sizes newborn and 0-3 months that my baby will never wear again.

I finally forced myself to clean out Emerson's dresser drawers to make room for her summer clothes. Picking up each and every teeny tiny little onesie made me tear up. Where did my newborn go?!?!

Now of course, I am loving every second with my 4 month old, and I love that every single day she learns something new, but there's something so... final about putting away her newborn clothes. She's only going to get bigger and bigger. In no time at all, she'll be asking me to drop her off a block from the mall so her friends don't see that her Mo-ommm drove her there.

And this is where it gets sticky... now I get why so many people have babies that are only 12-18 months apart in age. Seeing those tiny outfits made me think "Ohhhh, I want another baby like NOW!" This is a dangerous thought. But who could blame me when I have such a sweetheart at home?

Sigh.

Monday, April 16, 2012

One year ago today

It was April 2011. After months of sadness, and just feeling like.... not myself, I had finally reached a turning point. I had accepted what happened to Jack, and though I wasn't "over it" because I'll never truly be over it, I was ready to look forward to the future. I hardly ever cried anymore, which was a huge change from the daily crying sessions I'd had in the fall.

We had talked in great depth about when it would be the "right" time to get pregnant again. Part of me wanted to get pregnant immediately, but I knew it wouldn't be fair to our future baby if I wasn't truly healed from our painful and traumatic experience. I wanted to enjoy a new pregnancy as much as I could, because I already knew it would be anxiety-ridden regardless.

I had resigned myself in that I knew if it was meant to be, it would happen when it was supposed to happen. Because don't we often look back on the life-altering moments in our lives and think "Man, that was good timing"?

On the morning of Saturday, April 16th, 2011, I woke up really early. Like really early for a Saturday. (Which makes me giggle now because I used to be able to sleep from 10pm to 10am every weekend - hahahaha!) I knew on that early morning if I were pregnant, a home pregnancy test would register positive.

But I didn't feel pregnant.

I had been pregnant before, but I felt nothing. No symptoms, no signs. Just that sense of "If its meant to be, it'll be." The other thing that was different about this day was that Jon said to me the week before "I think we're going to have a baby in December, and it's going to be a girl." He seemed so confident, so I was afraid to take a test because I didn't want him to be disappointed. I had also promised him that I wouldn't take a test "early" so as to not get a false negative and hold out hope when it wasn't going to happen this time.

But, like the good wife that I am, I ignored his request and stealthily snuck into the bathroom to grab a test. I had a bunch of really cheap tests, because after all, it only costs $1 to see if you're pregnant. Or 60 cents in my case - what a bargain!

So I take this cheapie test, and I don't see any second pink line.

Dammit. I was so bummed. I grabbed the stupid test in all of its smugness and went downstairs. I set it on the coffee table (gross!) just so I could wallow in my disappointment.

About 10 seconds later, my eyes did a double take. What the........ wait, what is that? Palms on the table in disbelief, I tried to adjust my eyes with the dim of the early morning.

No, that's not what I think it is.....

I walk outside and hold the test up to the light. Still in my PJs. Hello everyone in my neighborhood, why don't you come out at this exact moment. I didn't care.

There was a second line. A faint second line, but it was definitely there.

I ran upstairs and basically jumped on Jon and scared the dickens out of him. He thought he was being attacked in his sleep. Nope, just me! With tears in my eyes, I said:

"Merry Christmas, Daddy."

It took a second to register, and then he said.... "No way." I nod my head vigorously as I hand him my 60 cent test. "Do you see a line, is there a line, ohmygod if you don't see a line I'm going to cry even harder." He takes it into the bathroom, inspects it for about 10 seconds, and then gets a huge smile on his face.

"You're pregnant."

Now all of a sudden my cheapie test wasn't good enough. I ran to the store to buy a $17 test, just so I could see the most beautiful word I had ever seen:

Actual stick I peed on

Now a year later, I can't imagine life any differently. That tiny pink line turned into this beautiful baby sitting on my lap right now, hitting the keys as I type.

And that's the story about how 60 cents changed the rest of my life.

Progress?

So it's December and I'm having a baby this month. No big deal right!?!?
In between "nesting" all weekend a.k.a. cleaning our entire house from top to bottom, and finishing up some minor last-minute must-have items (4 boxes of garlic bread, helllllo), I decided to look back at my Baby Bucket list from October and see how I did.

Audra's Baby Bucket List
1. Create a baby bucket list. Done. Success already! I am only holding myself accountable for the items placed on the list back in October. Anything else is negotiable.

2.  Watch "The Happiest Baby on the Block" DVD with Jon. Many, many mommas have told me this DVD saved their lives when their babies were first born, and helped them achieve longer stretches of sleep in those early weeks when you're basically a zombie. DONE! Watched it last Monday. That man is a magician. I highly recommend watching this DVD. The book is good, but the DVD is way more helpful because he actually demonstrates the techniques, and you can clearly see them working.

3. Take a mini babymoon with my husband. Went to Chicago in October and had a blast!

4. Read at least 3 non-baby books. I already have Until Tuesday and The First Husband on my reading queue for Book Club, but I'll take other recommendations! I will count this as done. I did read the First Husband, and I listened to two non-baby books on CD, so that counts right??? Hey, it makes my commute more effective. I "read" Lies that Chelsea Handler Told Me and Last Night at Chateau Marmount. I think Chelsea Handler is hysterical, and this book was no exception. I was "that"girl who was laughing to herself in the car. People passing me probably thought I was nutso.

As for the other book... I was really excited to read it, since it was written by the same author as the Devil Wears Prada. Loved that book, loved the movie, so no brainer right?? Wrong. The main character was a weak pushover, and I didn't like the ending. Not on my list of recommend books; however, I'm still counting this one as complete!

5. Re-organize the following places in our home: Master bedroom closet, attic, basement, dining room and let's throw in the garage if I'm feeling crazy. All but garage are done, and that's Jon's cave/domain, so I'm letting him handle it. Baby girl won't be out there assembling cars anytime soon, so I'm not too worried.

6. Put up a Christmas tree by December 5th. Done by November 29th. Success!

7. Go see at least one movie in the theater with Jon, and one with my friends (Good thing I already have a date with Holly and Jess to see Breaking Dawn in November). We meant to go this weekend, but there was nothing out that looked very appealing (and shockingly, Jon didn't want to go see an encore of Breaking Dawn with me.) But we DID subscribe to Netflix, so we've seen a few newish movies together over the last few weeks. Like the Lincoln Lawyer - great flick, and who doesn't love Matthew McC??

8. Continue working out at least 4 days a week, including prenatal pilates. Um, yeah... about that....

9. Write a blog post about the amazement that is prenatal pilates. Tomorrow seems like a good day for this.
10. Have all Christmas shopping/wrapping done by December 5th. Haha, self. Good luck with that. Actually, we were done on the 2nd. Boo yah!!
11. Figure out how to use Skype and video chat. Pretty much. It's downloaded and ready to go. I want the grandparents to be able to see kiddo on weekends when it's too snowy for them to visit.

12. Make and freeze 2 weeks worth of meals. Meh, after eating one frozen meal and gagging, I have abandoned this plan. I just don't care for leftovers, especially when they taste like freezer. I do have lots of meals planned out, and Jon can handle all of the grocery shopping. I am okay with this.

13. Take a "Baby Prep 101" class. Scheduled for 11/6!  DONE! Now I know everything there is to know about being a parent. Bahahahahahahahahahaha.

14. Enjoy sleeping in while I can! Everyone gives me that advice, but since I really don't sleep in now, I am finding it hard to force myself to do it. Maybe once the 3rd trimester fatigue kicks in I'll feel differently. Still sleeping like a... wait for it.... baby. Thank you God.

15. Get at least one video of baby girl moving around in my belly. It's so cute to watch, but she seems to move alot more when no one is around. Done! Check out her escape attempt from a few weeks ago.

16. Update my iPod with some new tunes. I honestly don't even know where my iPod is. Whoops.

17. Find the local publication that advertises family-friendly things to do around the area. I know it exists, but I can't find it! And I want to make sure she gets to experience as many cool things as I did as a kiddo, from pumpkin picking to hiking to cheesy festivals and the like. Found Columbus Parent Magazine at my library, and it's pretty nifty. most of the things will not be applicable for our little one until next summer at the earliest, but it's nice to have a heads-up and get some things put on our calendar... Circleville Pumpkin Show 2012, here we come!!

Phew... I'm tired just looking at this list. I feel so accomplished. That means I'm ready to be a parent now right???

Letter to my daughter... by me

My sweet baby girl...

Today is December 1st, and sometime this month, I will be holding you in my arms. I hope you don't feel overwhelmed by all of the love that is about to spill forth in this letter. Hopefully some day you can understand for yourself.

You are the sweetest little miracle I could ever imagine. Though we haven't "met" yet (on the outside anyway) I feel like I know you better than anyone. And that's probably because I do.

For example, I know you are kind and considerate. You've given mommy the easiest pregnancy I could imagine. Sure I was nauseous in the beginning, and sure I may get uncomfortable some times, but one tiny little nudge from you and I realize how minor these discomforts are compared to the life you have ahead of you... a life that I get to witness, nurture, and in which I will play a critical role.

You are playful and fun-spirited. I love watching you move from one side of my belly to the other, and watching you react to my singing voice (You either love it or hate it, but either way you let me know you can hear me).

You are adventurous. You can eat lemons one minute and crave milk the next. I hope this translates to a hunger for life and spontaneity that surpasses what your daddy and me can show you (and believe me, we want to show you ALOT). I hope you always appreciate any opportunity in which you can learn more, see more, do more.

All these things I know about you already, sweet girl. I know this because you receive more of my attention than anyone else. I know this because I know your daddy so well, and you are SO truly blessed to be half of him; you will learn over and over again that he is one of the best ones. And I know this because we have wished, prayed, and hoped for you, our beautiful miracle, for so long. You will never fully understand how loved you are, but let's just say that if love could move a mountain... the Grand Canyon would be in our backyard.

There are so many things I wish for you baby girl... mistakes I've made that I never want you to make; experiences I've had that I want you to have; experiences I've had that I want you to avoid. I wish I could protect you from every person, place, and thing that will every cause you any type of harm, pain, or sadness. While you're here in my belly, I can keep you safe... but once you're on the outside, I feel like I will be able to protect you less and less with each passing day.

But without those experiences, mistakes, regrets... I wouldn't be me. And daddy wouldn't be daddy. And therefore, you wouldn't be you. Sometimes I think about the path that our lives have taken... what if I had made one different decision? Every single thing that has happened to me and to daddy has led to this... has led to you. So even though I know I can't protect you forever, I know that you have a lifetime of joy and happiness in front of you.

I am equal parts excited/scared/nervous/anxious/elated and everything in between. I just want to meet you so badly, but I know that day is coming so so soon. I am going to miss rubbing my belly, and watching you squirm all around in there. Even when I'm by myself, you're always there... but not for long. I'm going to have to share you with the world, and even though I'll miss carrying you, I'm even more excited to watch you grow.

I love you princess... see you soon.

Sleep now (or forever hold your peace)

When you are pregnant, you get all SORTS of unsolicited advice.

Don't eat this, eat a bunch of that, don't walk too much, don't forget to walk everyday, you're not gaining enough weight, you look huge are you sure you're not having twins, use cloth diapers, don't use cloth diapers, pacifiers are the devil, pacifiers are a necessity and here's the best kind, you're carrying high your doctor is wrong that must be a boy, you're carrying high you're having a girl aren't you, you won't be able to breastfeed because it's too hard, breastfeeding is the best thing you can do for your child, how can you eat that piece of cheese don't you know that babies hate cheese?!?!!?!?

Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

For the most part, I just smile and nod and say thank you when someone offers me advice that I haven't asked for. I think people mean well, and want you to learn from their wisdom (or their mistakes). I get that. I take everything with a grain of salt though, because, as demonstrated above, advice is often contradictory.

In fact, the one thing I've truly accept about parenting advice?? What works for one baby may not and probably will not work for another. Humans are unique, complex creatures with varied temperaments, and I for one am grateful that this little girl bounding away in my belly is, literally, one of a kind.

One piece of advice that I have been hearing non-stop lately: "Oh, you're having a baby?? Sleep now."

via
Um, what?? I do sleep now. I sleep every day in fact. Though my daily routine varies, the one constant in all of my 27 years has been that every single day, I sleep. It's necessary for survival.

However, as we know because science tells us, you can't "bank" sleep, nor can you truly catch up on lost sleep time. If you pull an all-nighter and crash the next day, you may be able to function, but you're still not going to feel as good as you would have with 8.75 hours of sleep on both of those nights.

So, as well-meaning as the "Sleep now" advice is, honestly, it's not helpful. I completely understand that, as a new parent, I am going to be sleep-deprived. Like, more tired than I've ever been in my life. I am not that naive. But am I willing to be a zombie for a few months/years in order to take home a sweet, healthy baby?? You bet your ass I am. For me, there couldn't be a smaller price to pay.

And speaking of sleep... I have heard so many horror stories about the end of pregnancy. How you're miserable, uncomfortable, and all you want is for the baby to get out. Somehow, I think the universe has decided to give me a thumbs-up on this matter, because I am sleeping like a CHAMP these days. Even better than before I was pregnant I think. Knock.on.wood. Of course, I have a solid recipe of conditions that I think contribute to my blissful slumber:

Me, minus the "Beauty" and asleep for 100 years part
- Dark, cool room
- White noise
- King-size bed with a plush matttress topper
- A hubby who doesn't snore, bed hog, or steal the covers
- Four, yes four, pillows. One of each side of me, and two behind my head.

Ahhhhh, just thinking about it makes me sleepy.

Oops

My weekend productivity?

I accidentally bought this:

and this:

for the baby. That makes four Christmas outfits that she owns. FOUR. Did I mention that she's due ON Christmas Day? And that the majority of babies who are delivered naturally are overdue? So she could very well be born in January?? Yep.

But when I rationalized to myself that the baby needed a Christmas dress, because what else would she wear on Christmas day, surprisingly it just landed it my cart. I mean, we can't bring her home in regular old pajamas right?!?!

And so it begins....

This is what my weekend consisted of

Making this alfredo sauce and pairing it with spaghetti and bacon. A fat-filled dream come true.

Walking at a glacial pace on the treadmill at Snap Fitness while watching Serendipity. John Cusack is a cutie, in that weird, was probably a cute guy in your high school but you never noticed him, kind of way.

Discovering that we still own both a Playstation 2 AND the Family Guy video game for it and wasting 90 minutes of my day playing it. And then I painted a giant L on my forehead.

Spending TWO HOURS at Lowe's helping Jon pick out lumber for baby girl's closet. And when I say help, I really mean I sat on the industrial cart and looked at my fingernails while he painstakingly chose the best quality items for her nursery.  I knew I married a handyman, but seriously... the stuff this man knows how to do blows me away. I'm excited to share nursery and bathroom pictures once those projects are complete... hopefully in the next few weeks!

Taking a trip to Buy Buy Baby to buy buy some essentials for our sweet little nugget. I picked up some Carter's newborn-sized long sleeve bodysuits with matching pants. Some people tell me not to bother with newborn size, because most babies grow out of them quickly. Others say that their little ones wore them for over a month before switching over to the 0-3 month size. So I'm keeping the tags on just in case. But aren't they sweet??

I also bought her an infant-sized Santa hat, just to further her humiliation when I bring her baby books out on prom night.

Mexican food and fro-yo with my friends Heather and Skye, and her two little ones (who are adorable and are excited to meet their new friend!). We went to a place near here called Spoon Me, and though it is no Orange Leaf by any means, it did hit the spot.

Annnnd, since I have a slight problem... I may have ordered two more infant headbands for baby girl. Whoever told me it was an addiction was NOT joking. But I bought these two from an Etsy shop of a friend's cousin, so I feel like I'm just supporting entrepreneurship and am therefore justified.

Also, thanks to good old DST, I slept 10 GLORIOUS HOURS on both Saturday and Sunday mornings. I really need to knock on a giant piece of wood, but as of now (33 weeks and counting) I am still sleeping wonderfully and feeling really, really good. The pregnancy gods are being kind to me, so now I need to come up with some sort of sacrifice to keep them happy for the next 48 days.

What fun/awesome/unproductive things did you do this weekend??

Yep, that's happening

Today is November 1st....

October Showers bring... December babies??

I am horrible about taking pictures. No really, one of my New Year's resolutions is to get better at it. I have a good memory (I think?) but there's something so wonderful about capturing a moment in time via a digital copy. So thankfully I had some good friends on hand this past weekend to document the baby shower my sisters-in-law held for me and baby girl.

We actually had two baby showers in the month of October, but for some reason I can't get the pictures from my first shower to transfer from my phone to my computer. So once I become more technologically saavy, I'll make sure to update with those pictures too!

Update: I got a few!   Not sure why they're so small but here they are!

Pink-themed food, naturally
Amazing homemade candy apples for a take-away present
A "Christmas" Tree full of baby items, a nod to baby girl's due date :)

I was so overwhelmed with happiness, emotion, and gratitude on Saturday, for many reasons. First and foremost, I can't believe the caliber of friends and family I have. No one had to come, and no one had to bring a thing, but instead, they showered our little princess with literally every single thing she could possibly need for the first year of her life. Honestly, between the two showers, there is not ONE thing that I think she still needs. (Mommy might want to buy you some more embarrassing and ridiculous outfits, but those can wait) I just can't believe how many people truly care about me, my daughter, and our little family. It's so humbling, and appreciated more than they will ever know. I just wanted to hug every single person over and over again, because there's just no way for me to say thank you enough. I wish there was another word for thank you, because I feel so much more than thankful for having each and every one of you in my life.

Also, I just can't believe we've made it to this point. After everything we've been through over the last year and a half, I can't believe that my sweet little girl will be here in just two short months. I feel like it has taken an eternity to get here, but I am so grateful for the journey, because it has made me a better wife, a better mother, and that much more sure that I am SO READY to take this baby girl home with us.

Sometimes it's hard having such good looking friends ;-)
The living room was taken over by baby-ness
The belly dominates the picture. I am HUGE!! And I love everything about it :)
The lovely spread
The taco bar was a HUGE hit!! :)
My friend Kim made the coolest stroller/baby gift contraption I have ever seen. Warning: If you're my friend and pregnant, you are probably going to get one of these as my gift because it is just so cool!
Her first pair of jeans!
Wings for our angel :)
It's a Girl!!! :)

A cookie bar for the shower guests... all homemade because that's how Lindsay rolls
The aftermath
How could someone so tiny need so many things??? We are so grateful and BLESSED!
We can't wait to meet you sweet girl!
