Toddler Meals

Happy Monday!

Our weekend was fun, despite the fact that no one bought our house. (Why are all homebuyers in our area being so selfish and slow I wonder?)

Yesterday we took Emerson to the mall. Naturally, we had to pop into the Disney Store because that's where dreams come true. Then we get to a display rack and see a Minnie Mouse lunch bag, and girlfriend went nuts!

"Minnie! Minnie! MINNIE!"

I didn't even know that she understood the difference between Mickey and Minnie, but boy did she! She grabbed that thing right off the rack and held on for dear life. So of course we had to buy it for her. (I wonder how we'll respond some day when she goes "Mercedes!!" "Spring Break in Cabo!" Is that how the kids on Super Sweet 16 get away with it???)

But for the bargain price of $12.50, this little bag made her happy so there we go.

After bedtime, I decided a new lunch bag meant new lunch ideas. I try really hard to come up with creative, healthy foods to pack in her lunch every day, but I feel like I'm in a rut.

Here's what Emerson eats in a typical day:

Breakfast: Whole grain toast with butter, strawberries, milk (oh dear does she love her milk)

Snacks: Bananas, graham crackers, Cheerios, apples

Lunch: Cheese cubes, apple sauce, crackers, kiwi, pinwheels with vegetable cream cheese, green peppers, leftovers from our dinner the night before. Easy stuffed that can be packed for "school" and doesn't necessarily have to be heated up.

Dinner: Whole grain pasta, broccoli/peas/carrots/some kind of vegetable, cottage cheese

What do you feed your little munchkin?? Ideas welcome :)

Baby #2 Must Have Items

One of the benefits to having a second baby so close in age to the first is that you "have everything." The knowledge, the wisdom, the experience, and tons of baby crap that you can recycle and use with your second child.

It feels like I just put some baby stuff away (Boppy, Rock N Play, baby bath tub, etc.) and now we'll be dragging it all back out in just a few short months. Though we do have alot of the essentials, there are still some things we'll need to purchase before May. Not everything is absolutely critical, but it would sure make my life easier! And life with 2under2 is better when it's easy, right??

Baby #2 Must Have Items

Baby #2 Must Have Items by audra5909 on Polyvore

We bought this monitor with Emerson and we LOVE it! I can stalk watch her all night long, and it's clear as day. For baby #2, we can buy just the camera and it will sync with our current monitor, and we can pan their rooms all night long. Yay for concurrent baby stalking watching!

We bought a Baby Bjorn for Emerson and I used it all of 2 times. She was such a tiny baby and I just did not feel like she was secure in it at the beginning. But everything I read about having 2 kiddos is that you MUST have a baby carrier if you want to accomplish anything, and the K'Tan looks so cozy that I think we'll give it a try!

I plan to write an entire post about Emerson's obsession with her "baby." She has a ladybug blankie buddy and let's just say if she had to choose between eating and having her baby right next to her, she'd pick the baby. It's that serious. But I do credit this little thing as the reason why Emerson sleeps so well at night - she's got a friend keeping her company. It's so so soft and lightweight that I don't need to worry about it being "breathable" when the baby is younger. What I will do different with baby #2 though is buy more than one (unlike what we have for Emerson). Big mistake on my part. Big. Huge.

This crib seemed to have the best compromise between style, reviews and price. I bought it on Amazon on Black Friday, but after trolling nursery ideas of Pinterest, I have since exchanged the brown one for a white one. All the adorable nurseries have white cribs, and all of a sudden a brown crib looked hideous. I have my priorities straight. Thank goodness for Amazon Prime and free shipping!

5. Joovy Scooter X2 Double Stroller, Black
My sister, who has 7 children, recommends Joovy for their double strollers over any other brand, so I am absolutely taking her advice. This one has great reviews as well. Since B2 is due in May, I see many, many walks outside with my little ones next summer.

6. JJ Cole Diapers and Wipes Pod
Am I the only mom out there that HATES carrying a diaper bag? Ever since I discovered the clutch, I rarely carry a purse anymore, so carrying a diaper bag feels like carrying ten gallons of paint. Therefore, I need to invest in one of these cute little pods for quick trips out and about.   No need to pack for an entire night away when you're just going to Target. Am I right?

7. Gerber First Essentials Soft Center Latex Pacifier
Don't get me wrong, I still love the Wubbanub. However, at $12.99 a pop, I'm going to try a different approach with B2. These pacifiers came highly recommended and are less than $3. Emerson never took a pacifier past 6 months (which I am grateful for now) but we'll see if new baby is a fan or not.

8. Conair SU7 Sound Therapy and Relaxation Clock Radio
White noise. Critical. The end.

9. Graco Element Pack N Play
We'll need a second PNP for trips and visits, since Emerson will still be too little to go in a regular bed. We have a Graco one now and I'm happy with it (though assembling the thing takes more finesse than I possess usually).

Moms to 2+... am I missing anything??

Meggings

I have never gotten into the whole "leggings" craze.

Not because I didn't want to. I think people who wear them look adorable. I always see girls wearing leggings and I think "Man, what a great look!" but have never taken the plunge. I suspected that leggings would be a trend that was a flash in the pan, and would go away by the time I purchased them, so I held off.

But in my quest to avoid frumpy maternity clothes, I finally resigned myself to purchase some maternity leggings on a whim (aka Black Friday at Old Navy). I mean, they were $10 - if I hated them, who cares??? I could wear them as PJs or something.

So I put them on this morning.

HOLY MOTHER OF GOD.

Maternity leggings (henceforth known as "meggings") are the greatest invention of all time. With my sweater, long-sleeved shirt, and comfy boots, I feel like I'm wearing pajamas to work. I am so comfortable that I might cry. No seriously, they are THAT good.

Yesterday I was feeling grumpy because the button on my regular pants was digging into me. Today I feel like I could do yoga, then go straight to bed.

Yes, they are THAT good. I assure you. All my pregnant friends, you must invest. Right now.

See? Look how comfortable I am.

Oh, and don't think I missed the irony of the Tampax machine photobomb.

Weekend Recap

Happy Monday!

Did everyone "fall back" yesterday?? For as long as I can remember, I have NEVER taken advantage of that extra hour. I am just not a good sleeper-inner (not a word). But we successfully transitioned Emerson to the time change, so I consider that a win.

This weekend was lovely. To summarize its greatness, you need to know 3 things:

1) I finally got the "mom" cut.

Yep, I chopped off all my hair. Not because Emerson tugs at it, but just because I was feeling brave, and all of a sudden shoulder-length hair felt stifling. I love it. Jon says I look modern and sassy. I just love that I only have to use half the shampoo I normally do.

2) I got the deal of the century.

For weeks now, I have been lusting after my friend Karleigh's Michael Kors watch. It's a rosegold watch, and while I don't love gold, rose gold just spoke to me. I had to have it. And then I looked it up online, and it was $275. Hmmm. No dice.

So you can imagine my delight when I stumbled upon this gorgeous little knockoff at the best store on the planet, and hooray! $15 and I am almost as cool as Karleigh. Almost.

Similar
3) I have physical proof that my daughter is the greatest gift of all time.

For her Christmas gift, Grandma got Emerson a photo shoot with a photographer she loves, so that we could have Christmas pictures of her this year to send out. It was such a sweet gesture, and I am SO SO SO SO happy that we did it. Emerson was the perfect angel during the shoot, and Jenn our photographer was a pro and so gifted at working with babies. Here is a sneak peek from yesterday's proof. I feel like I need to call Pottery Barn Kids and tell them I've found their next star. I dare you to disagree.

Can't. Handle. The. Cuteness.
I can't wait to see the rest of the pictures!!

Have a great day everybody!

Happy Monday!

Hello friends!

We had a lovely, relaxing weekend. Like most (ok all) weekends, mine was consumed by playing with Emerson and keeping her happy.

Here's our weekend rundown in a nutshell:

Friday night: We did alot of cuddling. We got a report from the babysitter that Em might be getting bottom teeth. TEETH?!?! Only big girls get teeth. She wouldn't let me open her mouth enough to check myself, but, like the good mommy I am, I immediately whipped out the teething toy I've been wanting to try.

Have you met Sophie??

The most amount of money you'll ever spend on a chew toy, but I've heard over and over that it's like baby crack when your child is teething. It smells weird, and Jon said it tastes funny (yes, he tried it) but Em seems to like it so it's now a part of our lives and our living room.

Then we went to Babies 'R' Us, and Emerson is now the proud owner of the Fisher Kick and Play Piano. In other news, I am a sucker.

We had to stop in the "Mother's Room" for a quick feeding and diaper change, so we took the opportunity to have a photo shoot with mom and baby. In case you're wondering, yes, those are baby knee highs she's wearing. Probably the one and only time she'll wear them since her thighs are so chunky. BTW, chunky baby thighs are hands down the greatest thing on earth. Look.

While Jon and his dad were golfing, Em & I went shopping with Aunt Lindsay! She helped me pick out a necklace for Lin's wedding. This is my bridesmaids dress:
via Nordstrom
We went to Charming Charlie to find something purple and funky to go with it (I added the funky part-Lindsay just said pick whatever suits us best). I had it narrowed down to two choices, so I let Emerson pick the winner:

Must....get....sparkly....thing
Then on Sunday we went to Aunt Kenny's for a cookout. Emerson got to try on her Baby Gap jeans, but all she really cared about were her rainbow striped socks. Girlfriend STARED at them once she discovered her feet.

What up, yo?

She also had quite a bit to say about the NCAA tournament:

I also ran 5-6 (maybe 4?? We're really not sure) miles with Holly and Kristen. We are holding each other accountable for our food indulgences choices for the next week in an effort to eat better/healthier. We can do this ladies!!!!

And that was my weekend.

Today I am coming to you live from JURY DUTY. I was summoned while back on maternity leave, so they postponed it until this week. I am keeping a running commentary today that I'll publish tomorrow. Let's just say it's been... interesting. Here's a hint: I probably have ebola.

It's Ok Thursday

It's OK...

that I have eaten a Jimmy Dean Turkey Sausage Muffin every single morning for the last 2 months. They're only 260 calories - sue me. They just haven't stopped being delicious.
that I have made 3 independent trips to Sam's Club just to buy mega boxes of these delicious little treats (they're 4 for $9 at Kroger or 12 for $11.50 at Sam's.... hello bargain!!)

that I felt such a strong sense of camaraderie with the gal in front of me in Target because she was buying my favorite mascara. Bat those eyelashes girlfriend!!!
that I have a problem paying more than $20 for a blouse (cheapskate) but I have no hesitation in dropping $40 + shipping on a whim to buy Em something called the Baby Merlin Magic Sleepsuit. When I say it out loud I feel slightly stupid. But it's OK.

that my hair looks super frizzy when its warm out - I'll trade frizz for the 80 degree days we've been having fo sho!

that I still watch How I Met Your Mother. It's getting progressively less funny with every episode, but dammit..... I have to know who the mother is.

that I have no time to watch the news or anything of substance, yet I just admitted to watching HIMYM. (On DVR - justified due to lack of commercials)

I...use....too....many....ellipses...in...all....of...my...communication.....

..........

to be uncomfortable when receiving compliments. It's not that I don't appreciate them, I just can't take them well. I have no idea why.

What are you saying "It's Ok" to today??

Frugality? Meet Reality.

Here's my conundrum for this rainy Thursday morning... grab your coffee.

Though I am now back to my pre-pregnancy weight (yay!) I still feel, for all intents and purposes, FAT. Not, OMG, get-a-crane-she's-stuck-in-the-house fat. But to me, I feel large, and not in charge. Everything is just... wider than it was before. Wider is not good, especially since I have so many striped sweaters.

I mentioned a little while back how I was trying to get back in shape through running and the 30 Day Shred. This combination WORKS, at least for me, if you can stick to it. The problem is that I am back to work, and I have a 12 week old baby. Shockingly, I have much less free time than I thought I would.

Using My Fitness Pal and tracking calories, I am still losing weight, but I don't think dieting alone is enough. If you want to look toned, you have to exercise. And for me, walking isn't enough. I need to sweat the pounds away, otherwise I don't feel accomplished. I need to run.

My darling husband is back in school to get his MBA, so on top of working full-time and watching our sweet pea in the mornings, he is in class two nights a week until 10:00pm. So it's not like I can leave Em alone in the living room while I go the gym. My plan was to do the 30DS on the nights he had class, and run on the nights he was home.

But then Em decided she needs to know mommy's whereabouts at all times. The last three times I have gone to gym after she went to bed, she has cried and cried for Jon until I came home and fed her. Even if she just ate. It's like she knows I'm not in the house and she is piiiiiiiissssed.

The other problem with running after she goes to bed is that I am knock-down, ass-dragging tired at the end of the day. The last thing I want to do at 8:30pm is go back out in the cold, run at the gym, get home, shower, and be all wired up and not fall asleep until 11pm. Especially since homegirl has been eating much more frequently at night aka wakes up every 2 hours famished the past few days. Growth spurt maybe? I get up at 5:45am every day, and I NEED my sleep. I have to be asleep by 9:30pm in order to be a fully functioning human at work the next day. So until Em sleeps through the night consistently (which many people who are exclusively nursing will tell you takes a LONG time), I just can't go to bed that late.

Ok, still with me? Herein lies my conundrum, at last.

The solution I came up with is that I need to buy a jogging stroller. Em LOVES being outside, loves being strolled in her stroller, and loves looking around at all of the foreign objects in our neighborhood. So she'll be happy and entertained, and I can get my runs in even if Jon isn't home. I won't have any excuses!

But jogging strollers aren't cheap. We have a baby now, and I am trying to be good about frivolous purchases. Except for her, we buy her ridiculous stuff all the time. (Case in point, we may or may not have spent $40 on this Adidas track suit that she'll wear maybe 1-2 more times before she's too big for it. Yep.)

I am having a hard time justifying the $180-$250 it would cost to buy a stroller when I probably should be saving that money for childcare. Or groceries. Or college. Or headbands.

I thought maybe I could buy one on Craigslist to save money, but then I thought, just like cars, stroller tires wear out. And then to replace them is an added expense so I might as well just buy new.

So now I'm struggling with frugality vs. reality. I don't want to spend the money, but I'm afraid I will never be able to get back into shape without one, given our time constraints.

I need someone to tell me either a) It's fine because we'll get alot of use out of it or b) Just wait a few more weeks and Em will be sleeping better and I'll have more energy to go to the gym that I already pay for every month.

HELP!!!

Emerson's Newborn Must Haves

Admittedly, I spent WAY too much time researching any and all baby products when I was pregnant. I read every review, watched every YouTube demonstration video, and read every message board regarding each particular product we considered purchasing. It was excessive really.

But now I'm glad I did. Em might just be an easygoing baby with a happy temperament, but I'd like to think that maybe some of what we've done has helped her ease the transition from cozy womb to big scary world.

So here is my list of the items that, so far, we could not live without. There are alot of other things we use daily that are nice to have, but these are the essentials.

SLEEP STUFF

Happiest Baby on the Block DVD by Dr. Harvey Karp

First and foremost... watch this DVD before you have your baby. The accompanying book was recommended to me by my sister, who has 6 happy children, so I figured she knew what she was talking about. I won't get into the nuts and bolts of this philosophy, but basically Dr. Karp believes that the first few months of a newborn's life are like the "4th trimester" and that by mimicking the sensations the baby felt in the womb, you can calm your unhappy, crying baby and make them the... wait for it.... happiest baby on the block. I don't really know most of my neighbors, but I think Em is the happiest baby on our block (okay, so she's the only one I've seen, but still).

Anyway, the principles make total sense to me, and we've been using the techniques since day one. Again, not sure if it's just coincidence, but Emerson has been a great sleeper so far, and I feel well-rested almost every day, so something is working for us.

You don't have to buy the DVD... we just rented from the library. I'm telling you, CHECK IT OUT! You won't be sorry.

The Miracle Blanket

One of the principles in HBOTB is that since babies were so scrunched up and snuggly in the womb, when they come out they get startled by their flailing arms. So swaddling your baby is the key to calming and relaxing your baby, which encourages deep and peaceful sleep.

When we first got home from the hospital, I decided not to swaddle her at night because she was constantly moving her arms around. I thought she wouldn't like being trapped by the swaddle. Well, after 2 nights of her waking every 45 minutes, I decided to give the Miracle Blanket a try. Hallelujah! She instantly calmed down and slept a good 3 hour stretch that first night. And now, as soon as girlfriend even sees TMB, I swear her eyes start drooping. She can go from crying hysterically to happy camper in less than a minute. It is awesome!

The blanket freaked us out at first because it literally looks like a baby straight jacket; Jon thought we were torturing her. But with her arms free she'll wake herself up, and that is way more torturous for a growing newborn. We only use it at night, so that she associates TMB with nighttime sleep, but this little invention has saved our lives!

I've also started loosely swaddling her for daytime naps with the Aden & Anais blankets, because again, she seems much happier, but we save the nice snug swaddle for bedtime. I'm telling you, we couldn't live without this one!

Fisher Price Rock and Play Sleeper
Comes in all colors, but of course we have it in pink.
If you enjoy your sleep (and who doesn't), this will be the best $40 you spend as a parent. This thing is awesome! We put baby E in this at night to sleep, and she sleeps so soundly. Because of it's design, the baby feels like they are still being held, and the slight incline makes me feel better in case she were to spit up in her sleep (which, thankfully, we don't have a very spitty baby yet.... fingers crossed!)

It's also a rocker, so if baby girl is having a hard time falling asleep after I put her down, I just rock her back and forth for a few minutes and she's out like a light. You can keep it right next to your bed for easy baby access, or carry it around the house for a portable napping station.

She loves it. I love it. You'll love it to.

White Noise Machine

Another absolute essential item, according to Dr. Karp (and now to me and Emerson). The baby hears white noise and your heartbeat constantly while they are in your belly, so when they come out, it's just too gosh darn quiet for them. If swaddling doesn't calm Em down right away, putting her down with white noise nearby certainly will. I even turn the radio to a staticky station when  she starts to fuss in the car. It's amazing how quickly she calms down when she hears it.

We have this one by The First Years, but there are tons on the market. I even have a white noise app on my phone in case she's having a hard time falling asleep.

Summer Infant BabyTouch Monitor
So nobody told me this, but newborns make ALOT of noise in their sleep. Like, alot. They grunt, cough, snort, and even cry out while they are sleeping. I read that this happens when they are transitioning from one sleep cycle to the next. Either way, it was scary at first. I kept picking Emerson up at every little sound, thinking she was wet or hungry, when in reality I kept waking her up when all she was trying to do was move on to her next cycle. (I can just imagine her....Geez, MOM! Back off and let me sleep!)

Even when we determined that her sleep sounds were normal, it was still hard to sleep ourselves because every little sound she made would wake us up. One night I was hanging up laundry, so Jon put her in her nursery in the Rock and Play with the monitor on. I kept expecting her to wake up because mommy wasn't right next to her, but she slept great! And when I went in to nurse and change her, since I wasn't carrying her as far as I normally do, she was able to stay asleep and fall back to sleep much easier. So now she sleeps in her nursery and is happy as a clam.

Anyway, back to the monitor. We love this one because we have a very clear shot of the baby. You can also pan the room with the monitor (you know, in case you want to check for boogeymen) and it even has a Talk feature so the baby can hear your voice. I leave the monitor right next to the bed, and I'm able to hear her immediately when she starts crying for real. Trust me, you will very quickly learn the difference between what we call "fake outs" and the real deal. For Em, fake outs sound like apathetic noises... the real deal sounds like "HELLO!!! Get in here and feed me goshdarnit I am starving!!!!"

This monitor is a little pricey, but for our peace of mind it was definitely well worth it. You can also buy an additional camera for another room, so some day when Em has a sibling, we can watch them both at the same time.

Fisher Price Soothe and Glow Seahorse

Okay, so this isn't a must have for sleep per se, but it definitely helps our nighttime routine. This adorable little thing plays about 10 minutes of classical music and has a nice soft glow. I use it when changing her diaper at night. It's enough light so that I can see what I'm doing, but not so much that it wakes her up completely. Plus, the soothing music keeps her calm and happy. And at 3am, I will do anything for a happy baby.

DAYTIME FAVORITES

Wubbanub
I am someone who was anti-pacifier. I've heard it gives them an overbite, they become dependent on it, bla bla bla.

But when your sweet little baby is fed, changed, warm enough, and still fussing, as a parent you will do whatever you need to do to make them happy. And since pacifier use is linked to a decreased risk of SIDS, I feel okay about it.

Em wouldn't take a normal pacifier at first, so we figured we couldn't use them. But then we tried the Wubbanub. Oh Em Gee, girlfriend LOVES this thing. With the cute little toy attached it makes it harder for her to spit it out (and trust me when they spit it out before they're ready, the sadness that ensues is not one you want to experience). Plus, she loves looking at the little toy.

Is $10 alot to spend on a pacifier? Yes. But we have two of them. And I will probably get another one. Again, it's a small price to pay for a happy little girl!

Boppy Newborn Lounger

Emerson doesn't get put down much while awake (it's hard being so loved by your parents, friends and family isn't it?) But if I do need a minute, she loves laying on this pillow. It's so soft, and she can look around at the world without being completely flat on her back (which she HATES and I have nightmares thinking about transitioning her to her crib, but that's another story for another day).

Anyway, I love this thing. I wish they made an adult-sized one.

Pampers Swaddlers
The best diapers on the market, in my humble opinion a whole 4 weeks into mommyhood. There's a yellow line that turns blue when the baby is wet, so there's no wasting diapers. And so far, no leaks!! They're slightly pricier, so if you're expecting I'd recommend buying one case a week, that way you're not buying them all at once. Because trust me, they go through A TON. I had no idea.

CLOTHING

Just like with her name, I have developed very specific criteria on what type of clothing is best for my newborn:

Zip-Up vs. Button: Why are any baby pajamas made with buttons?? In the middle of the night, the last thing your newborn wants is for you to fumble with all those teeny tiny buttons. The zip-up onesies are awesome, and make the 3am diaper changes must faster.

Newborn size vs. 0-3 month.  Everyone told me "Don't even bother buying newborn-sized clothing, they grow out of it so quickly!" So at firs we didn't have anything size NB. But luckily, we received quite a few NB sized items at our baby showers, and Jon went out and bought her some precious onesies one day when Carter's was having a huge sale. Thank goodness! Em was SWIMMING in the 0-3 stuff when she was born (as well as the size 1 diapers, since everyone told us not even to bother with NB sized ones). Even now at 4 weeks, the 0-3 stuff is still huge on her. She's got really long legs, so her NB stuff, after several washes, is getting snug, but unfortunately there's no in between. So this week she either looks like a stuffed sausage or a baby who is wearing her big sister's clothing.

Carter's vs. Gerber. Hands-down, Carter's wins. The Gerber onesies we have feel, as Jon so affectionately put it, like cardboard, and I agree. I'm sure she doesn't care, but I just don't want to put my sweet baby with her soft skin in pajamas that feel stiff. Carter's clothing, on the other hand, feels so soft, and the NB sized ones we have all have the mitten cuffs on them (VERY crucial because, due to the flailing arms, babies can scratch and gauge their faces without mittens).

PHEW! Are you exhausted reading this?? I'm exhausted after writing it. I hope this helps someone, because instead of napping or showering while Emerson napped this morning, I wrote out the longest blog post in the history of this blog. It's all about priorities.
